skiing.jpgFound on Freebie Fanatics: free subscription to Skiing magazine for two years with no strings. Looks legit. I guess they make it up in volume.

Snow in the Rockies

Sep 25, 2007  ·  07:57 AM

lovelandsnowmaking.jpgYesterday, Vail received its first snow of the season, Beaver Creek got three inches, and Loveland fired up its snow guns. Seems too soon.

Get Paid to Watch Warren Miller Films

Sep 24, 2007  ·  07:55 PM

I just found out that at official Warren Miller screenings, they generally give away all kinds of goodies to film goers. Screenings of Miller’s newest opus Playground seem to start in October and, for instance, if you go to one of the screenings in Boulder, CO, you’ll get free lift tickets to Steamboat, Copper Mountain, and Winter Park, plus a coupon from Boulder Ski Deals and a free subscription to Skiing.

But in Seattle, you’ll receive tickets to Apex, Big White, Silver Star, Sun Peaks, Whistler, Crystal Mountain, White Pass, a $25 REI coupon, $50 to Joe’s Sports, and a subscription to Skiing. That’s pretty awesome, even if you do end up skiing in the rain.

Check the listing to find a showing near you—there’s a gazillion and it looks like tickets are about $20.

Free Skiing at Crested Butte

Sep 23, 2007  ·  11:26 PM

Crested Butte is reviving its free skiing promotion which they last offered seven years ago. From November 25 to December 15, the mountain will be giving lift tickets to anyone who walks up to one of their tickets windows—no string attached.

The resort, known for it’s corduroy and expert terrain, opens for skiing on November 17.

News and Notes: For the Slackers in the Family

Sep 11, 2007  ·  12:04 AM

Ski Rex is still happening, as is Sniagrab.

You can still get your Colorado Pass too, although the price has gone up. It’s still a phenomenal deal. Current prices are good through October, 14.

Avalanche Jam

Sep 02, 2007  ·  03:03 PM

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is holding it’s 6th annual Avalanche Jam in Boulder on September 7th. The event is a fundraiser for the CAIC, who provide avalanche education and invaluable forecasting. Press release below and here. It sounds like a fun time and it’s a very worthy cause, especially for anyone who hangs out in the backcountry snowpack.

A Pain in the Cash

Sep 01, 2007  ·  02:05 PM

When you go to buy your Colorado Pass this weekend, make sure you take your checkbook, debit card, or credit card, because they don’t accept cash.

It makes sense when you think about it, though. They could easily end up taking in over $20,000 per day just in cash sales alone. So for security purposes, I can see how it’s better to keep everything on paper.

Get Off Your Ass: The Kevin Version

Sep 01, 2007  ·  12:12 AM

It’s late at night. It’s the night before the biggest ski sale weekend of the year. I’m a couple of glasses into a handle of Captain; partly because it’s Friday night, mostly because I don’t have to work tomorrow. Suddenly, I freak out: “I’m gonna look great with all the gear I get this weekend. But after ten years sans skiing, how am I going to look when I’m actually coming down the hill?”

So I immediately Gooooooogle “ski exercises” and hit the jackpot at IfYouSki. They’ve got all the basics for a beginning (again) skier: warm-up, stretching, running to build that core stamina, and circuit exercises that are skiing specific.

I still might not look all that great coming down the mountain, but at least I won’t be so sore when I’m trying to hit on that Ski Bunny I saw in the lodge.
