Salomon Vertigo Softshell

Feb 15, 2008  ·  01:54 AM

salomon_vertigo.jpgThe other day at REI, these Salomon Vertigo X-Mountain shoes caught my eye—I’d seen them earlier in the season for about $95, they looked “wintery,” and the quick lace system was interesting when I saw it in action on other people’s feet. They are good-looking in a urban-alpine-functionalist kind of way, and they say “Soft Shell” on them so they totally played on my warm spider-roll and cadbury-creme-egg associations.spider-roll.jpgSoft-boiled I was intrigued and on sale for $53, I had to bite.

Avalanche Survival Myths from Dawson

Feb 11, 2008  ·  07:05 PM

Lou Dawson details his top three Myths of Avalanche Survival. Definitely worth a read if you think skiing in the back country is all fun and games—Lou knows how to be grim.

Recap:

  1. My beacon is my savior—and needs more features.
  2. If I’m buried in an avalanche, I’ll just snuggle in my nice little snow hole till my friends dig me out.
  3. You get dug out of the snow and ski to the bar for a hot buttered rum.

A Good Day at the Top of Breck

Breckenridge--Peak 8--Lake Chutes

Despite my misgivings about a resort with a well-earned reputation for catering to hordes of inept skiers with “wacky” hats, I found myself at Breckenridge last weekend.

To get away from the obstacles, we made our way almost immediately up to the Imperial Express chair—an exercise which only took an hour or so. But, once in the rarefied air up there near the top of Peak 8, we found the relative peace attendant upon only those places possessing the power to cause hypoxia among the flat landers.
