Powderchimp.com shows Colorado skiers what they already know: there’s a lot of traffic on I-70 in the winter.

It’s actually a cool mashup of Google Maps and traffic/ski cams in Colorado pulling together information that I usually waste time on CDOT’s site trying to find. Unfortunately it’s difficult to navigate on my iPhone, which is where I’d be most likely to need it as I try to figure out if I should just turn around and go back to Fort Collins or if I’m stuck in a short jam caused by people slowing down to look at sheep.

Thanks for the good word! Our iPhone and Andriod implementations are on the way soon!

We’re working on some more improvements to the collection and representation of the weather and traffic conditions. We’ve included some road closure data but will soon have some nice simple representations of that kind of vital information on the map and google earth representations themselves.

You also might notice the google search trigger in the lower left part of the Earth frame. You can find places to stay, eat, rent equipment… using it.

We’re working on the various lift line cameras! There are a bunch of cameras up in the ski areas and we’ve only just begun. We’re also getting snowpack data that we can lay over the Google map tiles. So you can see snow in the google earth representation. Views and data from the parking areas is also on the agenda.

We’ve added a little game where you can ski around and in a little van that taunts you about where you’re going and stuff. When we’ve completed our snow and signage layers it will actually be a GREAT way to pre-ski a bunch of your destinations to prepare you for a better experience on the slopes.

Thanks again for the great post!!

Cheers!

Chimpy
